About Pip and Miss Havisham

PIP: Philip Pirrip known as Pip is the main character and narrator of this novel. He was an orphan who lived with his sister Mrs. Joe and brother-in-law Mr. Joe, in the marshes of Kent in England. He can be very romantic, and passionate. He is also very insecure and his naturally great conscience is also some of Pips qualities. Pip wants to improve himself in any way he can, either with education or morally or socially. Pip really wants to improve his statuses so that he would be worthy of marrying Estella. When Pip does actually get this gentleman’s fortune, he begins to treat his friends and family poorly and snob like because he thinks he has become a gentleman, but not intentionally. But deep down Pip is a loving boy who actually does a lot for other people. For example, secretly making Herbert (his friend) apart of the business and also helping Magwitch in his time(s) of need. So, Pip has a lot of different personalities that make him perfect for the protagonist in this novel.

MISS HAVISHAM: Miss Havisham is one of the most memorable characters in the whole novel. She is a bitter old woman who lives in and old rotting mansion, who wears a wedding dress all day every day. She can never live a day without remembering the most tragic, horrible moment of her life, which was at twenty minutes to nine, on her wedding day, she was stood up at the altar. So, to get revenge on all men, she adopts Estella to break men’s hearts. When Miss Havisham realizes that her “getting revenge” on men is hurting Pip and Estella she begs for forgiveness. She portrays one of the main messages expressed in the novel which is that bad behavior can be redeemed by expressing pain and sorrow for sins or offenses and sympathy.
